Dreamy Mixed Media Boats

  boat.plaid

Lovely little boats by mixed media artist Kathleen Koopman are floating in the window at FOUND on a dreamy voyage. The sailboats have dainty handkerchiefs or recycled fabrics as sails and float through the air like something out of  a bedtime story.

boat.star Others tell a story of companionship. Birds join in the journey. boat.sidebyside We asked Kathleen to share her inspiration for these dreamy boats:

I'm part collector, part archivist, part archaeologist, and part researcher. I find things, arrange them, organize them, and display them.

My work for the past several years has focused on the assemblage of found objects, scraps, photographs, fiber, and paper, to create a narrative with memories and dreams intertwined.

I draw from a collection of artifacts, found: junk stores, the street, the landscape, the pathways of life: items cast off and abandoned, waiting for the opportunity tell their stories, effected by time and memory.

Constructing boats rose out of that process, out of these materials, as an extension of the assemblage process, and the inspiration grew fueled by the metaphors: voyages, sailing, hulls, rigging, sails, navigation driven by the vagaries of wind and water: discovery, travel, wandering.

Bon Voyage!

Made in Michigan. Ceramics by Darcy Bowden.

darcy.char3 During Ann Arbor Art Fair week, Darcy Bowden will be our featured artist, bringing over one HUNDRED of her ceramic works to the shop!  We're clearing out the center section to make room for this fun made in michigan show and sale.  Her quirky, modern pieces often have whimsical POPS of color and sensitively drawn lines in the design. Other groups have a mid century feel with chunky sculptural shapes. Ceramic Art & Printmaking Show with Darcy Bowden  Tuesday, July 15, 2014.  Opening Reception Party. 4-8 pm. July 16,17,18. Meet the artist 3-7 pm daily at FOUND. Sat. July 19.  11 am - 2 pm.  Clay Demo by Darcy!  Hand forming & decorating simple, modernist bowls using ancient paddling techniques. july.studio The group above is just out of the kiln over at Yourist Studios where Darcy does her magic.  Notice the bowl shapes.  The clay is formed by paddling it over a specially selected stone - a very old method with a modern twist.  At the Saturday demo (7/19 from 11-2 at FOUND) Darcy will show us how it's done.  The vessels below are an entirely different group she does.  All these are coming to the show! darcy.modern Darcy is a long time FOUND friend and inspiration!  Many Ann Arborites will recognize Darcy from her days as an art teacher at Huron High School.  I almost forgot to mention that printmaking is another of her passions and she'll also bring prints, cards and other fun things to the show. Hope to see you during Art Fair Week 2014!       Continue reading

Busy Elves at FOUND

elf.star.votives While we've been as busy as elves this past week getting all of our holiday merchandise into the shop, we've had some funny little elves to keep us company!  The woodland elf above is corralling a set of votive candle holders.  Perfect for tealights from our friends at Green Daffodil Soy Candles. For the past 6 years, we've hung an upside down tree from the ceiling at FOUND.  Of course there was an elf to help hang the tinsel from the branches. elf.tree Some of his buddies climbed ladders to help.  But my favorite has to be the elf that grabbed onto a sled flying off the ceiling - hair and beard and eyebrows blowing back in the wind... elf.redsled The biggest elf of all is Jolly Old Santa Claus himself.  This seven foot fellow is sitting at his workbench, doing what Santa does this time of year - getting the toys ready for good little boys and girls. santa.big We had fun putting together these fun display.  But that's only the beginning.  Watch the blog for more photos - or even better, stop by the shop and see for yourself! Our favorite photographer, Charlene Plagens, is also posting wonderful images on the FOUND  instagram page and we now have a pinterest page.  Check them out - she's adding more photos every week!   Continue reading

Annual October "Old Stuff" Sale at FOUND

cowtags

If you are on our email list, follow FOUND on Facebook or have been in the shop this month, you know about our "Old Stuff" sale already.  It's that time of year when all vintage and antique merchandise is 20% off.  Throughout October we clear as much of the vintage as possible to make room for the November switch0ver to the holidays.  I had a chance to go to some great sales in August and September so we started the month with fresh vintage merchandise.  Above are some tags that were intended to be attached to a cows ear.  Never used, but nicely rusted around the edges. Found them at The 3rd Sunday Market in Bloomington, Illinois.  Might be fun to use in jewelry or collage. dollheads I found over a hundred pairs of vintage sleepeye sets of doll eyeballs at the Alameda Antiques Market when I was in San Francisco in August.  The counterweight mechanism and piece that would attach into the nose makes it so they stand upright. Reminds me of something out of A Bugs Life or Toy Story.  Fun to have on a shelf or play with. eyeballs At the Allegan, Michigan antique show, I found a huge lot of drawer pulls.  Only have about 8 left, but they would be wonderful on kitchen cabinets. handles   album Like old photographs?  I added lots of new snapshots to the fifty cent box this week.  And we have hundreds of loose cabinet cards and this wonderful old album filled with antique photographs.  I also bought a collection of over 250 postcards, mostly addressed to young Nellie Jones.  Some of my favorite Halloween postcards sold already, but the rests are all at FOUND now. pcWitch Remember - if it's old - it's on sale this month at FOUND!     Continue reading

Vintage Cracker Jack Prizes

.cracker.jacks A toy surprise in every box!  Though the caramel coated popcorn and peanut treat was first introduced at the 1893 Colombian Exhibition World's Fair in Chicago in 1893, the name Cracker Jacks wasn't trademarked until several years later.  And it wasn't until 1912 that the infamous prizes began to be found in every box.  Early prizes such as baseball cards and metal toys are highly collectible today.  Today the brand is owned by Frito Lay and the prizes are not that exciting - with stickers and temporary tattoos being the most frequent surprise. Do you remember the excitement of  scarfing down the contents of the Cracker Jack box as a kid to get to the secret PRIZE at the bottom?  I don't actually remember the prizes, but the anticipation of some tiny terrific treasure that the box might hold made me want to save up my coins and take them to Della's store on Front Street to buy a box. Recently, I found a fun stack of vintage unopened Cracker Jack prizes in an antique show booth.  Can you guess what's inside? the package asks. Actually, though I wouldn't mind having some fresh Cracker Jacks to munch on right now,  I'm more charmed by the vintage packaging for the prize than by the prizes themselves.  The little envelopes feature jokes and riddles on the outside.  These nostalgic graphics and typography would lend themselves well for scrapbooking or altered art projects.  We have about 2 dozen vintage prizes in the shop right now.  The candy boxes (and the tasty treats) are long gone, but the memories that these prize packages bring back are delicious. So, can you guess what's inside?         Continue reading

Go Jump in the Lake!

gojump.2 With the temperatures and humidity rising this week, I'd like to go jump in the lake!  I'll be doing that NEXT weekend, but in the meantime, these mugs and signs from a Georgia company called Go Jump in the Lake bring a grin to my face.  A new shipment came in last week - great for the cottage this summer.

lake.pillow

We also have Great Lakes pillows - machine washable cover, with down insert.  Did you memorize the names of the Great Lakes by the H-O-M-E-S method, for Huron-Ontario-Michigan-Erie-Superior? Growing up in a landlocked area, I didn't learn this memory trick until I moved to Michigan - the state which borders most of the Great Lakes!  Which ones do not touch Michigan?  Google it if you're not sure. ski.frame.front We had a ski boat when I was a teenager - what fun!  I'd like to say a terrific water skier, but my best tricks were crossing the wake without falling and letting go of the tow rope with one hand long enough to wave at the people in the boat. Then I usually fell.  It was fun anyway. I know I showed you these frames made from water skis before - but I'm just fascinated by this clever upcycling - here's what the back looks like...the hardware and foothold hold the frame up! ski.back Enjoy these summer days.  And remember:  if you're lucky enough to live on the lake, you're lucky enough!   Continue reading

Katherine Larson painting demo at June 21 Artwalk Ann Arbor

Katherine-Larson-thumb-350x276-40399 We're gearing up for Artwalk Ann Arbor next Friday.  As a special treat, artist Katherine Larson will be set up with her easel, brushes and paints creating miniature scenes of Ann Arbor right in our hallway!  You may recognize Katherine's illustrations from her years of being one of the local artists who produced Ann Arbor Observer covers - last year she released a wonderful compilation of those covers in a lovely book called Ann Arbor Observed.  We carry this popular book at FOUND - during Artwalk, Katherine would be happy to autograph a copy for you. a2observed She is also the illustrator behind the "Ann Arbor and the Rest of the World" posters that are always best sellers at graduation time - the poster is based on an iconic New Yorker cover. Although Katherine will be working on miniature canvases during Artwalk, she's well known for creating large scale murals.  The latest mural was a series of panels for the new Whole Foods Market in Detroit.  Here's a link to a short video made during the creation of that mural:  Muralist Katherine Larson. Detroit Whole Foods.  It's fascinating to watch the progression from single panel to full mural installation on the huge brick wall of the new building. Larson.wholefoods.section   larson.wholefoods Katherine is also the graphic designer behind our FOUND ads and a personal friend. It's been a pleasure to get to know this multi-talented woman - not only has she written and illustrated numerous children's books, but she is also a trained opera singer, makes custom fairy houses, does fine art portraiture and plein air painting, creates Ann Arbor ornaments, presents school assemblies, builds props and generally just knows how to get things done.  On her website there are photos of other large scale murals and projects she's done.  On Friday, June 21 from 5-7 p.m., we hope you'll stop by FOUND to meet Katherine as she creates miniature scenes of Ann Arbor.  She'll also have limited edition prints of Observer covers for sale - the perfect size to fit in our Urban Ashes frames! ABOUT ARTWALK 2013: Artwalk Ann Arbor is a one evening event - from Kerrytown to Main Street - sponsored by Art Showcase Magazine and Ann Arbor State Bank.  Friday, June 21 from 5-9 p.m.  Most of the events in Kerrytown will be finished by 8 p.m.  In addition to Katherine's painting demo, we'll also sponsor an ArtTalk by Paul M. Hickman at 6:30 in Fustinis Oils & Vinegar Shop and the first ever Urban Ashes frames second sale at FOUND. Here's to you, Dad!

father.banner.600 About 12 years ago, I scanned hundreds of  family photos onto "zip disks" - at the time, the latest, greatest thing to store large numbers of high res images onto.  Just over a decade later, I'm dismayed that I no longer have a means to access those images.  Of course, Mom still has all the originals, but as I was writing this post I had hoped to include a few of my favorite pictures of my dad.  Here are some photos I'd include if I had the files.  One of my absolute favorites is a 1960's photo of him wearing a white t-shirt stirring a huge copper caldron of apple butter in the back yard, surrounded by us little kids.  I'd also include photos of him dressed up at baptisms and parties - looking dapper in madman-era suit and tie.  And others in his overalls taking care of what needed to be done.  Still another favorite finds him wearing a yellow sport coat and raising a PBR on the deck of the lake house at one of the many huge family gatherings Mom and Dad would host each summer.  Whenever I go to the lake house, he is there in spirit. My father is always a part of me - I look in the mirror and see his face.  When I figure out smart ways of moving heavy things, I think of Dad.  When I see the Coke cooler in the shop, I think of Dad.  He reused what was available to serve a new purpose.  After I started FOUND, Dad loved hearing about ways my customers upcycled and reused things.  Ask me about the rusty locker basket story sometime.  I know I have a special talent for  fitting more in the back of my van than anyone would think possible - it runs in the family - from my paternal grandfather who knew exactly what space something would take up without needing to measure.  Dad and I can't quite claim Grandpa's ability but we definitely both got the spacial gene.  I also got the short legs/long torso genes from him, but never mind about that.  What really matters is that we strive to emulate the best qualities of those whose lives touch ours.  This Father's Day weekend, I'll be remembering and celebrating things about my dad that have made me a better person. (insert photo of Dad on porch at lake house here.... OR substitute more recent picture since I don't have that image file at this time) Here's to you, Dad!  Love you and miss you. lakehouse   Continue reading
