Upcycled jewelry that really measures up!

bracelet.ruler Using vintage metal folding rulers to create unique bracelets and rings is a novel idea for upcycled jewelry.  Lightweight and eco-funky, these are a new favorite with our customers.  Made in Wisconsin - available at FOUND. Below are some other pieces by the same artist who uses old road signs, heavy aluminum restaurant trays and salvaged industrial metals.  Rings, bracelets AND these awesome money clips = great gift ideas! moneyclip Cuff bracelets with vintage Coca Cola tags on various recycled metal bases. bracelet.coke For some of the cuff bracelets, the artist used parts of old fire extinguishers.  All these have a very industrial look. bracelet.extinguisher     Continue reading

Time to plant flowers

Frost earlier in the week - 80 degrees yesterday. And beautiful sunny skies this morning.  It's time to plant flowers this weekend! garden.before Below are some things we have in the shop this week that may give you a bit of inspiration.

A vintage salmon pink trowel!  This is the first one I've found.  Have some other nice sturdy green ones.  These old trowels don't bend when you dig into a bit of clay soil like a lot of the new ones.  And we have a few vintage McCoy pots.  I'll be out searching for more vintage pots and garden tools this weekend.

I picked up couple dozen of these rusty orange buckets at the Ann Arbor Antiques Market last month.  Not sure what they were originally used for but they have drainage holes in the bottom so they are perfect for annuals. buckets

Also took in a bunch of old fashioned bushel baskets this week - an inexpensive big planting container - just line it with garden cloth before adding dirt.  And how about using a mop pail to plant a big geranium?

Antique tool boxes are the right size to plop a couple of big pots of flowers in - or to use as a coffee table on the porch!  Bert's tool box is painted orange inside and has the original liner tray.

FOUND has some plant holders made with rulers.  These are manufactured, but we also have yardsticks for those who prefer DIY!

Enjoy these beautiful Spring days!

p.s.  the Ann Arbor Farmers Market had a wonderful selection of annuals and perennials yesterday.  check them out on Saturday or Wednesday...

May flowers and Mother's Day

Right on cue, April showers turned to May flowers last week!   In this part of Michigan, it's too early to plant annuals, but flowering bulbs and perennials are alive with color.  Daffodils just finished blooming. The bleeding heart by my front walk is looking sweet in pink today.  And the fresh green of spring is everywhere. bleeding.heart Mother's Day is Sunday.  If you are still looking for a gift, a bud vase made right here in Ann Arbor from recycled silverware is just right for a special spring flower (or even a dandelion that the kids pick). SONY DSC We also have a fresh selection of  colorful flower pins, handcrafted from old zippers! zipper.pins.colors If Mom likes to garden, she might like this vintage gardening book. What about this vintage nursery chalkboard sign?  It would be fun to hang this near your garden or on a covered porch! flower.board The Ann Arbor Farmers Market will have lots of Mother's Day flowers this Saturday.  Once again this year, photographer Myra Klarman will be taking free portraits with mom in the outside market area Saturday morning from 10-noon.  Her lovely informal shots in the Farmers Market are always special.  The prints will be available for pickup in Kerrytown after May 25th. On Mother's Day, the Sunday Artisans Market has a wonderful lineup of artists and entertainment scheduled from 11 a.m. in the Farmer's Market area. FOUND is so fortunate to have this Artisan's Market on Sundays AND the Farmers Market on Saturdays and Wednesdays right outside our windows! We're thankful for Spring Flowers and for Moms!  Enjoy these beautiful Spring days.           Continue reading

Urban Fairy Door update from Kerrytown

fairy.door.close Perhaps you've noticed that Urban Fairies have built a little workshop and garage in front of FOUND in Kerrytown.  Or perhaps you've walked by dozens of times and never even seen it.  Close to the floor is this 3 or 4 inch high entry door to the space where Ann Arbor fairies come to work and play (in the wee hours of the night when the rest of the building is all locked up).  The latest evidence appeared last week when a fairy sized typewriter appeared. fairy.door.long Here's a closer look. fairy.door.typewriter And an even closer look. fairy.typewriter.small I wonder which fairy knows how to write... as I understand it, most fairies are illiterate.  But could this be the beginning of a story or a fairy poem?  Is it a to do today list?  Or a letter to a friend?  Or just banging on the keys and getting them all stuck...  The tiny type is too small for me to decipher. fairy.typewriter.back Do you know about the Washtenaw Wanderers Fairy Door Walk on Sunday, May 5th?  Join them at the Michigan Union Sunday morning - click here for details.  We'll have cookies at FOUND during the Fairy Walk.  Or you can find a map on the Official Urban Fairy Doors of Ann Arbor website that you can explore as your convenience. fairy.ufo Mentos and Vernors and...bubble gum?!! fairy.piano What kind of music do you think urban fairies prefer? Or do they just pound on the keys? (that keyboard looks a bit rough for a fairy real pianist.... We'll have to have an expert on urban fairies come to the shop for a Q and A before too long. .

NOTE : this fairy workshop disappeared when Found moved in August of 2015. Evidence of fairies can be found at their new location, downstairs by the Kerrytown Courtyard.

Fun shopping in Ann Arbor. Watch for FOUND updates!

WatchLetters The last couple months have been kinda low key at FOUND.  We've been in the background busily planning and bringing in more fun finds.  Though Spring has come slowly to Ann Arbor, the shop is bright and cheery.  Last week I added some vintage dishes, more buttons and old books. Arrivals from the winter shows are all in. The shop is a fun mix of old and new and handmade from recycled! Pictured above are  vintage watch parts that can be used in jewelry and collage projects, plus some metal letters from a company in Dallas (new, but with a great rusted vintage look) that are fun and reasonably priced. We have lots of fun things planned, so watch this space and if you don't already follow FOUNDgallery on facebook , you might want to check it out.  Charlene has been posting photos several times each week (she composes such creative images!) and we've been sharing other pages that we think our FOUND friends will find interesting.   Continue reading

St. Patrick's Day at FOUND in Kerrytown

Wee Bit 'o Green Sale at FOUND in Kerrytown on St. Pat's Day!
As kids, we would craft green construction paper chains and shamrock decorations this time of year.  And make absolutely certain we were wearing something green on March 17th, lest we get pinched by our classmates.  Wearing even a tiny bit of green was protection - through proving you had green flowers on your underwear was not something the teacher approved of... green socks were easier to prove.
On the day that honors St. Patrick and my Irish Gramma, FOUND celebrates by encouraging you to find wee bits of green throughout the shop and saving big green!  Any item in the shop that has the color green as part of it is 17% off for that day only.  Not only the things that are obviously green, but things like the Morning Mint lotion with green on the label. And books with green covers. Cards and prints with green illustrations. FOUND magazine.  And jewelry made from green postage stamps. Oh, my.  ALL of the Green Daffodil Soy candles will be 17% off that day.
It will be a good day to check out the new brooches and earrings made from recycled zippers - the green ones will be 17% off.
There are still a few cozy scarves made from recycled cashmere sweaters with a bit of green in them.  And many of the Burlap Boutique totes are made from coffee bags with green printing in the labels. It's a treasure hunt. Wee bits of green are everywhere!
If you're looking for Easter candles or maybe a new bunny, you might save a bit of green, too.
Some of my favorite frames from FoundRe have some touches of vintage green from long ago.
We'll be open on St. Patrick's Day from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., with green socks on and some green cookies to share!
Here's tipping my hat to you and wishing you the luck of the Irish all year long!

March 2013 at FOUND: Vintage dolls and toys

mohair.tiger Went on a quick vintage buying trip for FOUND at the end of February.  Then March came in like the proverbial lion - with plenty of snow and ice in Ann Arbor.  Today was a sunshiny day, nice and cozy by the windows.  Cozy like this furry little mohair cub at the shop. We've been busy adding lots of older things to FOUND lately.  Here are some of my favorite finds.  The outfit on this vintage doll looks like she was a working girl or traveling in style - with her wool tweed jacket and felted hat, and red shoes to compliment the ensemble!  But she got pretty dirty along the way - wonder what adventures she had and where she's been.  Her owner clearly didn't leave her sitting on a shelf. doll.hat Here's a little purse she may have carried - or it could have been carried by the little girl that owned her.  It's fun to hang little coin purses in a grouping on the wall - or incorporate them into artful assemblages.  I don't mind that they are a bit rusty.  Do you? coin.purses These antique baby dolls definitely have "condition problems" - peeling skin, crazed composition, crazy hair, discoloration - but there's something about seeing them up on the shelf that makes me smile, knowing each was once some little girl's special dolly. dolls.3babies I found this bright eyed bisque doll and a bunch of odd doll parts, like extra legs and arms that could be used in projects.   dolls.littlechina Some antique dolls have glass eyes that are haunting.  This doll is composed of a variety of materials, with straw filled arms and legs that are disintegrating.... Tiddledy Winks? Tiddley Winks? Whatever you call it, the image on this box is wonderful.  And it come with bakelite "winks". tiddleywinks Other children's finds include a few trucks, doll suitcase, lots of lead soldiers, a group of mohair puppets, some antique ABC blocks and more.  Stop in soon to see what we've found!   Continue reading
